E32010: Nintendo Shows 3DS, Kid Icarus: Uprising

President Satoru Iwata unveils the companyís 3D-capable handheld and new game Kid Icarus: Uprising. 3D Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid titles on the way.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has just shown off the company’s new 3D-capable handheld, 3DS, for the first time at E3.

The device boasts two screens - a 3.5 inch widescreen display on top capable of showing “full 3D graphics” without the need for glasses, and a DS Lite-sized touchscreen below.

Iwata said that users can maximise the 3D effect, minimise it or choose any point in between using a 3D slider. He noted that fingerprints and smudges harm the 3D effect, saying “touchscreen and 3D screen do not get along very well”, hence only the lower screen has touch capability.

The device features a motion sensor, gyro sensor, “slide pad” - which is like an analogue stick - plus four face buttons and a D-Pad. It also sports two camera lenses enabling users to take and view photos in 3D. Iwata said the device is capable of playing 3D Hollywood movies.

A trailer was then shown off for new title Kid Icarus: Uprising, which will be playable in 3D. Shigeru Miyamoto is working on a 3D Nintendogs game, while third party 3DS games will include new entries in the Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid series.
