Valve co-founder Gabe Newell has said that the developer currently has no plans to bring zombie shooter Left 4 Dead to PS3, but that EA’s “interested” in getting the game on Sony’s console.

“For The Orange Box, EA did the PS3 version,” Newell told 1UP. “They're interested in getting a PS3 version done. We just have to figure out where the resources can come from. We don't have the bandwidth. We're doing the 360 and PC version ourselves.”

Despite publicly criticizing Sony’s PS3 on a number of occasions in the past, including telling Edge that it is “a waste of everybody's time", Newell went on to say that Valve would likely be supporting the console more in the future.

“I think we need to do a good job with supporting the PS3 with the Source engine. Our engine licensees would like us to do it. I think we need to invest more in getting that in there. So I think that we'll, over time, be directly more and more supporting the PS3 as our bandwidth allows us to.”

This is the EXACT same thing that happened with Orange Box!

Valve developed the game for the PC and Xbox 360, and Valve specifically said that the Playstation 3 hardware is infefior to the Xbox 360.

EA knew what a great game Orange Box was, and they wanted to release it for Playstation 3. EA said that they had a developer with lots of PS3 programming experienced who could tap into all the potential the PS3 had to offer.

Well, I believe those developers "did" harness all the power the PS3 had to offer, but it looks to me like Valve was correct when they said the PS3 hardware wasn't nearly as good as the Xbox 360.

Orange Box ended up being rated very highly with scores over 95% on the Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 version was awarded Game of the Year.

The Playstation 3 version of Orange Box wasn't released until a long time after the Xbox 360 version, because the PS3 is so much more difficult to develop games for. When the PS3 version of Orange Box was released, it received review scores of 75%-80%. The Playstation 3 version wasn't even nominated for "Game of the Year" awards, because the PS3 version wasn't as good. In all honesty, it seemed like Orange Box actually LOST POPULARITY after the released of the PS3 version!

I hope the same thing doesn't happen with Left 4 Dead, because that is a great game that needs to be fully optimized for the superior hardware that the PC and Xbox 360 have to offer.

Close but not quite. That's one way to interpret the interview your trying to "quote" though.

Btw, outsourcing often results in poorer versions... because it's very difficult to pick up someone else's work and continue. Then add on the fact of working with a system different from the PC and 360, which are still somewhat similar to code/design for.

The Kim translator says:

Oh dear the 360's might have lost an exclusive, I must discredit the PS3 and gloss over the fact that many developers say the PS3 isn't that bad to develop for and that with 12 months under their belts the issues seen last year with the Orange Box probably wont be seen. If it isn't a good port I'll be sure to let everyone know.

Great post. For a while I could not understand for the life of me what Kim was saying.
