EA Games label president Frank Gibeau has said that licensed games will play less of an important role in EA’s strategy for the time being.

"The bloom is really off the rose for licensed games," the executive told the Los Angeles Times. Having given up on the James Bond and The Lord Of The Rings licenses in recent times, Gibeau said that EA is “not going to do another” Godfather game.

An EA publicist later moved to tell the site that "nothing has been decided as to future [Godfather] sequels,” but the company's interest in the franchise appears to have dulled after Godfather II sold 246,000 copies during its debut month in the US.

EA still holds the licenses to make games based on the Harry Potter and Jason Bourne franchises.

oh please.

we're supposed to agree with this guy and feel sorry for EA because they bought the game rights to Bond, LOTR and Godfather then proceeded to make par to sub-par games with them?

in the wake of GTA, who the hell told them a Godfather game was even a good idea?

what he really means to say is he's (EA) pissed off that the costs for these rights -- coupled with development and marketing for each -- exceeded whatever profits they made on them.

gee, i wonder if the quality of the games themselves played a factor in all this...

I'm no analyst, but I think I'd drop Bourne before Bond. And Godfather? What's the point? Collect the spill-over between GTA & Mafia consumers? Licensed games are fine; they're just doing it backwards. You don't license & then think of a game. You think of a game first, and then you license it.
