EA has criticised consumer market research firm NPD, citing the lack of digital sales tracking in its monthly reports. NPD doesn't include figures from digital distribution channels including Steam, Xbox Live, PSN and the App Store.
"Using NPD data for video game sales is like measuring music sales and ignoring something called iTunes," said EA's Tiffany Steckler. "We see NPD's data as a misrepresentation of the entire industry."
NPD analyst Anita Frazier pointed out that the company also releases a quarterly report that focuses on digital sales: "This is in addition to what we are best known for and that is our monthly reporting of new physical sales occuring at retail."
EA, whose increasing digital presence includes App Store and online titles, predicts that one fifth of its of its projected revenue for the current fiscal year will come from digital sales.
