EA CEO John Riccitiello expects global videogame players to top a billion in a couple of years.
"A few years ago, I think there were a couple of hundred million consumer participants in our industry. I think we are going to break a billion in a year or two," Riccitiello told Reuters.
The growing market will provide plenty of opportunity for growth and EA is hoping to capture a broad section of players with a variety of products, from high budget console titles through to cheaper mobile games.
"They are participating in lots of different business models: online casual PC, downloading games to their iPhones," Riccitiello said. "They are doing micro-transactions on games like FIFA Online."
unless his definition of "game player" includes people who are simply aware of the term, don't count on it.
the industry will never reach the mass market so long as software continues to remain prohibitively expensive.
you think each of those "new gamers" being brought in by the Wii are buying dozens of $40-$50 games? *laughing*
They're buying more than you're giving them credit for and the PC market is pretty much dominated by casual gaming.
It's a shame that gaming is ruined by teenage jack-offs that think gaming should only be a load of GoW and Halo clones, preferably with tits. These are the people holding gaming back.
All other forms of entertainment can have something exist for everyone without people getting upset. I mean when it's the same time someone complained on a message board that Disney makes cartoons instead of horror movies or that the colouring book market is ruining murder mysteries?
Gaming is still very immature and won't ever advance as long as companies realise that these "core" gamers aren't the only ones that matter.
Hell most "core" gamers aren't even proper hardcore gamers they're just fanboy twats.
maybe that is the case for console games but on the pc gaming is making billions of dallors. Fifa online made more money than fifa on all consoles. pc gaming has always been a jugernuat. EA is just finding this out now. Blizzard knew this for years. The very reason value is huge.
