EA Sheds Over 200 Staff at Black Box

At least 200 workers at Vancouver’s Black Box studio have been made redundant, as its publisher EA continues plans to reduce its global workforce by ten percent. Black Box had some 350 staff at its studio before EA began the staff cuts.

An EA spokesperson has confirmed the redundancy measures, though wouldn’t specify the volume of staff leaving the outfit.

The Black Box team have developed a number of Need for Speed titles, while the group’s final work was the recently released Skate 2.

The news sheds more light on how EA will handle its plans to reduce its workforce by ten percent, a measure the company announced back in mid December. Speculation on the closure of Black Box began just days before this announcement.

EA has now made redundancies at Tiburon as well as Mythic, while Pandemic’s Brisbane Studio has split from the publisher. EA has not yet reached its target 1,000 job cuts.

Not that I'm happy about anyone losing their job, but I really hope this means EA is retiring the Need for Speed brand once and for all. The last installment worth a damn was NFS III: Hot Pursuit on the PSOne.
