Edge wins Best Games Magazine award at Games Media Awards
Eurogamer, Hookshot Inc., Kieron Gillen, Chris Donlan, Simon Parkin and Keith Stuart also picked up gongs at the ceremony, which was held last night at Vinopolis in London and compèred by comedian Russell Kane.
Games Media Legend went to Kieron Gillen, erstwhile PC Gamer writer, Rock Paper Shotgun cofounder, progenitor of ‘new games journalism’ and now retiree from game journalism – in favour of writing comics for Marvel for which he’s currently working on New Avengers, Invincible Iron Man and Uncanny X-Men. Despite widespread misunderstandings based on the award’s introductory speech by Simon Byron, it was not for Julian Rignall. “LOLWTF? I’m sitting here with aching teeth just having come back from the dentist? Did I miss something?” he tweeted from San Francisco as he read that he’d won.
A new award, Games Writer of the Year, judged by writer Tim Lott, went to IGN’s Keza MacDonald for her piece on Eve Online, Internet Spaceships Are Serious Business.
Edge contributors Chris Donlan, Simon Parkin and Keith Stuart picked up awards in Specialist Writer and National Newspaper Writer categories, while Eurogamer once again picked up the Games Site gong, having won it every single year so far in the GMAs’ six-year history. New downloadable game blog Hookshot Inc. won Games Blog.
We’re fantastically pleased to win the Best Games Magazine award, which is the fourth time we scored it. Huge thanks to everyone who helps make Edge the magazine it is: our editorial and design teams, our freelancers, the publishing support teams at Future Publishing who make it happen, and, of course, all our readers.
