Eidos Montréal general manager Stephane D'Astous has confirmed that the company is currently developing Thief 4.
"Eidos-Montréal is excited to unveil our previously secret second title in development at the studio, as Thief 4, the next instalment in the legendary series,” he said. "We're in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious project and a very exciting one."
No platform or release details were announced, although it’s likely more information will emerge at next month’s E3 event.
“It's too early for us to offer any specific game details, right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make, what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market," D'Astous added.
To date, the stealth-action series consists of 1998’s Thief: The Dark Project, 2000’s Thief II: The Metal Age and 2004’s Thief: Deadly Shadows. Looking Glass Studios developed the first two titles, while Ion Storm Austin developed the third game in the series.
Eidos Montréal is also currently working on Deus Ex 3 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
Earlier today Edge reported that Eidos has additionally confirmed the development of new entries in the Tomb Raider, Hitman and Kane and Lynch franchises.
Thief is my all time favorite game series (though T3 could have been better) and i still regularly play T2 due to the endless supply of new levels created by it's massive hardcore fan base. Eidos had better not screw with the setting, mythos, or core gameplay or I and a legion of other Thief diehards will be out for blood.
I suspect it'll bite ass cakes.
Seriously, if you're going to try to be hip with the kids and use l33t sp33k then at least get it right. 4 = a. thi4f probably looks dumb to those who don't know l33t sp33k and it will look dumb to those who do.
While that should mean much it tells me this game's creative input has likely come from the marketing department which means it'll blow.
I think your over thinking a now common marketing technique.
Saying the title on the box is evident that marketing is in charge of creativity is unfounded, as marketing very rarely, if ever, has anything to do with a game outside of marketing said game in the best way possible. The way the title is spelled has no impact on the game, and last I checked, does not fall under the banner of gameplay or even come close to it.
It is absolutely impossible to determine anything out of that, other than their marketing department is going along with other developers who are doing the same thing, whether some of us find it aggravating or not, it does nothing to either help nor hinder the game in anyway whatsoever.
Oblivion did well, and was a good game; Left4Dead did well, and is a great game (IMO). Thief 4 might do just as well, or not, it depends on the game, not the jpeg. No one is ever going to call it "Thi4f" – it's just a marketing tool.
(P.S. "1337 speak" "dude speak" "and "l337 sp33k" do not have, nor will they ever likely have, established rules, arguing weather or not a "4" can be an "e" is kind of a moot point when you're talking about the daddy of all spontaneously made-up internet lingos that change depending on who is the one typing at that given time.)
One of my favorite series - I hope they don't mess it up. The last game was also on console and it was still very good. When you think about it, the Thief games had a pretty basic control system so they really don't need to change much for consoles.
Amen. I played all 3 previous Thief games and they were (and still are) superior gaming experiences if ya like the whole sneaking around thing. I hope they don't focus-group it to death and f uck it all up. I'll stick to the PC version because something tells me the one for the consoles will be dumbed down and compromised.
I've got high hopes for this game. But i fear it'll be a dumbed down experience as it's getting ported to consoles.
Like Bioshock this is a single player experience and i hope they don't fuck it up by installing a multiplayer side of the game..
