Publisher turns a profit after losses last year, but Ninja Theory’s Enslaved sells just 460k worldwide.

Namco Bandai had a good third quarter of the fiscal year, posting a profit of 5.4 billion yen after suffering a loss of 5.7 billion in the same period in 2009.

Net sales rose slightly, up from 110 billion yen in 2009 to 114.4 billion. The firm has not revealed software sales for the quarter, instead posting combined figures for the nine months to December 31, 2010.

Its biggest performer was Tekken 6, which sold 1.08 million copies in the US alone, and Japan-only releases God Eater Burst and Gundam Musou 3 sold 460,000 and 430,000 respectively. In total, 64 titles sold a combined 13.8 million units.

The performance of Enslaved, however, has been dismal. Ninja Theory’s action-adventure was not a cheap project, with Hollywood writer Alex Garland and actor Andy Serkis involved and the title given a big marketing push.

Yet Namco Bandai’s financial statements show Enslaved sold just 460,000 copies in Japan, North America and Europe. By comparison Ben 10 Ultimate Alien sold 490,000 in North America and Europe combined.

Namco told MCV last week that it saw Enslaved as “a great catalogue title going forward” despite admitting that sales had been disappointing.
