2Epic admits Unreal neglect
Speaking to Industry Gamers, Epic Games president Mike Capps admitted the Unreal franchise had been ignored while the company focused its efforts on the Gears Of War series - and that he personally would like to see Unreal return. "It's been a long time since we shipped an Unreal game, and it's an awfully loved franchise that we hold pretty dear here," he said. "We haven't been giving it the attention it deserves because we've been focusing on Gears Of War and we're still a relatively small company. We've been sort of focused on making new properties, which you've seen with Shadow Complex, BulletStorm and Infinity Blade, but sometimes I think just as a businessman that maybe we should be spending some more time with our existing franchises."

2Ah...Unreal...my introduction to dynamic lighting. The Skaarj were like a hybrid of aliens and predators, decent fighters from what I remember. But then my memory tends to wear the rose-tinted glasses.
I would still put the original Unreal's enemy AI above 95% of any other FPS released since. Probably even 100%. Although it had to be really good since the graphics were so good you could really only fight 1 or 2 guys at a time. It was definitely more of a first person dueller.
The guy that did the enemy AI was the guy that coded Reaper Bot for quake, which was the best deathmatch bot available.
