Electronic Arts and Unreal house Epic Games have signed a publishing partnership that will bring a new unnamed property to market, the companies said Thursday.
Described only as an "all-new action title" for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, the game is currently in development at Epic's Polish People Can Fly studio.
No release date has been announced.
People Can Fly is the studio behind 2004's Painkiller, a sharp FPS that earned plaudits from games media. The studio recently ported Gears of War to PC, which led to Epic's acquisition of the studio last year.
"EA Partners gives independent developers like Epic the muscle of a global publisher like EA, along with the focus and flexibility of a smaller team committed to working with our individual needs," Epic VP Mark Rein said in a statement.
It's Epic. New IP means it'll similar to something they've done before (or Id has done before) but it'll have a new name. Not exactly what I'd call an exciting prospect.
Epic Games have several distinct IPs behind them, ranging from Epig Pinball, One Must Fall, Jazz Jackrabbit, the Unreal series and Gears Of War. They do have a diversified portfolio, perhaps overshadowed by their recent afficion for larger than life space marines. People Can Fly is a young studio, and they have proved that they can deliver with Painkiller and the porting of Gears to the PC.
With backing from EA, Epic's technology and experience and some clever Polish people at People (no pun), this new IP could be something to watch out for. Whether it will be similar to something Epic has done before remains to be seen, but the fact that this IP is being developed at the People studio indicates otherwise.
I'm fully aware of what they used to create and I'm fully aware of the fact CliffyB used to be a little Nintendo fanboy so he's grown up on so called children's games which, imo, is probably why they did Jazz Jackrabbit.
But they are doing an action title and it's being developed by a studio that has only done pain killer and the GoW PC port. Epic's own titles have been very samey since 1999 (almost 10 years ago). Unreal, imo while a shooter, isn't like GoW (or even UT imo) so I haven't included that. But since UT their games have features prisoners and soldiers or prisoner/soldier characters and their game's stories come off like they've been written by children. I mean come on, Gears of war with a faction called Cog or just watch the UT3 trailer for some classy dialog. For nearly 10 years they've had a fetish with muscular men in space and poor writing.
I'll be very surprised if they don't end up producing something different.
I think they are capable of much more, don't get me wrong, but I don't think they will try harder because
A) The industry as a whole is lacking variety.
B) They don't have to try because they've got their engine income to fall back on.
