The Entertainment Software Associationís annual report highlights the trade bodyís work during fiscal year 2009 and the challenges that lie ahead.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has released its annual report, highlighting the key work carried out by the trade body during fiscal year 2009 and the challenges that lie ahead.

According to the report, the ESA fought 43 bills seeking to regulate content and/or access to videogames during fiscal 2009, none of which became law.

The ESA also said that bills providing tax incentives for game development were enacted into law in Alabama, Georgia and Michigan during the period. It noted that 17 further bills to establish or increase existing tax incentives for game production are pending.

Looking ahead, the trade body said that it expects the federal government and Congress to spend much of the rest of 2009 focusing on issues such as climate change and health care, but noted that “it will be more important than ever for the [games] industry to highlight issues like rampant piracy in a stagnant economy and growth in the online marketplace to remain above the fold.”
