While the games industry is “finally gaining the respect we deserve,” ESA CEO Michael Gallagher still had five key points that he felt must be kept in mind, according to a recap of his E3 keynote reported by Kotaku.

The first point was to “remember the base,” to keep in mind that even as the industry actively seeks new markets it should continue to provide for the core gamer market.

The second point was to continue to seek out and welcome new markets by innovating in the product space.

Thirdly, Gallagher encouraged games to go increase how games are used, and to go beyond play and into more serious fields like education.

Fourth, Gallagher wants more innovative ways to provide parents with tools to protect their children from unapproved or inappropriate content. He did mention, however, that the industry is already doing well in this regard.

Finally, the ESA CEO said that the field must unite in order to help foment industry-healthy public policy.

I surely beg to differ! In fact I would be so bold as to say we're failing miserably in this regard! I run into countless clueless parents who think it's fine to get GTA4 for their 10 year olds. Until we make it prohibited to sell such games to minors with or without a parent, I would remain dubious until we're literally smacking parents up side their heads with M-Rated game cases in order to educate them
