Sony has revealed that it’s planning to show off its expanded PlayStation Network service in spring 2010.
Last month company CEO Howard Stringer said Sony would be “expanding the PlayStation Network to hardware other than the PS3, because the number of PS3 units sold puts a limit on the scale of the network possible.”
While he noted at the time that Sony operates a vertical structure for each product line that is resistant to change, meaning “it will take time to achieve this network growth,” he told CNN that the company may make acquisitions to hasten the rollout of the service.
Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai said that the company should be ready to show off the expanded PSN next spring. "It's now a matter of what all the services need to look like for each device, and coming up with a rollout plan. It's like city planning here, and we can start small. We don't need to build New York City overnight."
Hirai explained that the service will be broader than the existing PSN - which currently has 25 million registered PS3 and PSP users - and make it easier to transfer data such as images and video between devices like consoles, cameras and TVs.
The company is also planning to offer brand loyalists incentives like discounts and premium services, according to CNN.
If this means that PSN will become available for PCs, and will open up Remote Play (i.e. PSP connectivity) for PCs, this could be awesome. I doubt that's what it means, though! :P
I wonder if they will keep the name. Will they deem Playstation Network a suitable name for marketing it across digital cameras, etc? I'd imagine they might change it to Sony Inter-Device-Network or something.
