Peter Molyneux made online co-op features in Fable II a central selling point for the ambitious Lionhead-developed RPG.

So when Microsoft said last month the game would ship without online co-op, more than a few gamers raised an eyebrow.

But now, Microsoft has sent word that a free downloadable patch will remedy the game when it launches this week.

The firm said in a statement, "We are pleased to invite Fable II fans around the world to experience Fable like never before, with the chance to hop in and out of their friend’s Fable II worlds, to meet their heroes, dogs, spouses and experience Albion, together online."

The game launches in North America on October 21, and in Europe on October 24.

Maybe you can only join games that are at the same place as you in the main story?

I think plot and story wise who ever is hosting the game will be using thier current plot status, so for example if player A was hosting and was half way through the main plot line and player B joined i think player B would be plunged into same plot place as player A.

But if im totaly honest i have no idea, maybe it will be like Diablo2 style drop in/ drop out.

but if whatNickgamertag01 says is true then yes its a flaw but your profile will still be gaining loot and exp, and after all if people dont like the co-op idea, dont do it!

p.s Halo3 and Gears of War co-op is a bit hard to compare to Fable2

Yeah, comparing the FPSs with RPGs isn't fair, you're right. I think RPGs that have coop will have to be somehow structured mission wise, kinda like oblivion. If you play coop with someone and you're doing, say oblivion gate number 3 on the host's profile, but on your profile you''ve only finished gate number 2, you'll get credit for gate number 3 on your profile. So when you're the host or just playing by yourself, gate number 3 will have already been done. Maybe there's no perfect way to do it.

For fun, to just mess around, gain exp and loot I'm sure it'll be fun, but mission progression lacking will turn fable 2's coop into nothing more than a mild distraction. When Peter Moly-however you spell it says coop was a main focus, you'd think he'd get it right. But we dont' know for sure though...

My friend has fable 2 already (modded xbox...not fair) and she says when you're playing there will be bright oras of other people who are playing while online and you can hear them (just not see them other than the bright ora), then if you want to join up you would go up to the ora and click invite to join up. So she said its mmo-ish in that sense. I didn't know about that feature, that's pretty cool.

So, does anyone know how story/mission progress will be handled in co-op? It seems that if one person already had that particular section of the game completed with their character would they then be wasting their time with that section by doing it over? Or what if you joined into someone's game that was ahead of you, you would see stuff that you may not understand considering you're not that far into the game yet? Maybe its similar to Too Human where you get tokens for completing sections and if you do a section you haven't done on your profile online in someone else's profile you'll get the token for your profile. But that's kinda more for a linear action game, not an adventure RPG. Hmm.. It sounds like the coop is basically you're a guest in their world and are only there for loot gathering/experience but not to advance your own personal game progress. That's lame coop and really quite worthless if that's the case. Why play as a guest in someone else's game/profile when you don't get credit for your game/profile or gain progress in your own game? Its like playing rock band 2 online in someone else's band, you don't bring back any progress/fans/stars you earned while playing in their band online back to your band for credit/progress. Why does it seem developers (other than Bungie, Epic) can't quite get coop done right?
