Documents filed with the FCC confirm that Sony has a new PSP model lined up for release, the PSP-3001.
The PSP-3001 looks extremely similar to the PSP-2000, with no apparent changes to the exterior design of the handheld, although a number of Sony documents containing information on product “Schematics,” “Theory of Operation” and a “Block Diagram” are not available for public viewing following a request from Sony for confidentiality.
There’s no evidence on show of the rumored inbuilt microphone or the PlayStation button that has been rumored to replace the Home button on the front of the unit.
While Sony is likely holding some juicy details back, the system could simply feature new innards, with the platform holder looking to reduce its costs by utilizing smaller and more efficient components.
Reports are also speculating that the PSP-3001 could be better equipped to combat piracy than its predecessors.
Sony declined to comment when we spoke to a company rep.
