PlayStation 3 was the clear winner in Japan during the week ended April 19, with sales almost quadrupling to 62,527 units.

The massive sales increase, up from 16,701 units a week earlier, was no doubt driven by the release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete on Blu-ray, which features a playable demo of Final Fantasy XIII, and the launch of an accompanying Cloud Black limited edition PS3 console.

PSP sales remained ahead of DSi’s, although combined DSi and DS sales topped those of Sony’s handheld.

Wii sold 13,221 units, while Xbox 360 moved 8,652 units and PS2 4,230.

Here’s the full weekly sales rundown, courtesy of Media Create.

PS3 – 62,527
PSP – 40,065
DSi – 38,287
Wii – 13,221
Xbox 360 – 8,652
DS Lite – 6,438
PS2 – 4,230

Who cares about FFXIII on the 360? Because of the inherent limitations of the size of a DVD, Xbox owners will probably have to deal with multiple discs while PS3 owners would only need to deal with one disc. Assuming FF13 is around 30 or so GB, which is heavily possible, that is about 3-4 discs for the Xbox version.

They should release the game on a jump drive.

When you 100,000 or more, you can get a 32GB stick for about $1 apiece.

I cannot see your point. Lost Odyssey was on four discs and didn't diminsh its quality. Final Fantasy's VII, VIII, IX were all multiple discs and were amazing, so....?

but snake, this is a double layered Blue-Ray Disc!

Ahem. Anyway, assuming it's anything like previous FFs, there'll be at least 15 hours between disc changes, so it's pretty irrelevant how many discs there are unless your lethargy is really quite astounding.

Just checked out the GameSpot video playthrough of the Final Fantasy XIII demo, the beginning is indicative of many early Final Fantasy games, 8 and 10 in particular I think, with Lightning using a gunblade and the level looking something like the linear highway battle section at the beginning of 10, you're also part of a military group, more of a rebellion/terrorist group than say seed. IF you can find any other decent quality playthroughs apart from Gamespots (Or you can buy the demo) watch them, Gamespot suck and their reviewers in question (namely the girl) have less idea about FF than my little sis. PLEASE EDGE you need to start some video reviews I'm sick of listening to the morons at IGN and Gamespot!!! I'd love to hear some decent analysis of the game especially since I know EDGE have some big FFXII fanboys and girls hanging around. It would be refreshing to hear the opinion of someone who actually enjoyed the last FF iteration and don't just spend the entire video slagging off XII's sweet battle system (Algorithms aren't for everyone I get it) and making references to 10 which don't make sense. Sorry I had to come over here and vent, I can't believe how bad the quality of game journalism (especially for something this big) can be.

PSP sales are also strong.

It's been said year after year, but it seems like this will be PS3's time to shine.

I think Sony is lucky they retained FFXIII versus, otherwise FF fans would have no reason not to get it on 360. I bought my PS3 yonks ago and one of the reasons I moved to PS3 was because of FFXIII. Not only a great series it holds the most nostalgia for me out of any series.

if only the rest of the world fell over themselves for anything FF...

A demo moves more hardware then the full release of some "AAA titles." Says a lot about the Final Fantasy franchise.

This just shows that if you want to pump up the japanese game industry you should lauch launch more of what they love, FFXIII and DQIX are taking forever!.

Wow, never underestimate the insatiable Japanese appetite for all things Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

And guess on which system will FF13 sell on more?

Dan_Chippendale's picture

just goes to show that with a little bit of encouragement people are mad for BluRay and the PS3. Maybe indicates that the PS3 is priced right and that it just needs some exclusive content to make people sit up and notice.

jb1's picture

No, people in this case are mad for FF13.

LOL I agree but its definitely good to see Sony coming out on top in Japan I have no idea how Microsoft gets off saying there going to sell more copies of final fantasy exspecially seeing numbers like these for only a demo. Ive said it b4 Im expecting sales in the 100,000 when ff13 releases anyone else have any estimates.

Kenology's picture

Microsoft said that? That's interesting...

No way will FFXIII 360 sell more than FFXIII PS3 worldwide. But it'll be interesting to see how it sells in the US given how console Final Fantasies is assciated with PlayStation and the XBox360's much larger installed base.

MattyJ's picture

Microsoft have 10 million more people with 360s than Sony do have people PS3s. Obviously there are more PS3s in Japan than 360s, but never underestimate the West and Final Fantasy.

Any idea when that demo's out in EU?

Good to see the Japanese know where to best put their money.

Sony > Microsoft.

rahvii's picture

Advent Children Complete will be released in North America on the June 7, 2009

I seriously doubt the EU/US release will feature the demo. In fact I would bet my life on it.
