Despite EA’s gloomy financials for its fiscal Q3 – where the struggling publisher announced wider losses, bigger staff cuts and delayed releases for key titles – there was still positive news peppered across its report.
As well as announcing new titles such as Mass Effect 2 and Dead Space Wii, the company’s CFO Eric Brown stated that FIFA 09 has sold 7.8 million copies worldwide since its release.
Brown claimed that FIFA 09 was EA’s biggest selling title of last year, and had enjoyed a sales gain of 4 percent over its predecessor FIFA 08. “In Europe, we estimate it was the number one title across all platforms in the holiday quarter,” says Brown.
The title, which has impressively hung around the top of the UK charts since October, generally enjoyed more success with critics than its predecessor.
Meanwhile, EA reported that Need for Speed Undercover has sold over 5.2M copies. While an impressive figure on its own, Brown added that the game's sales were down 7 percent compared to last year’s Need for Speed Pro Street. EA clarified that Undercover’s 'sell-thru' was up in Europe year-over-year, but down in North America.
EA also stated that the WII, DS and PC casual title Littlest Pet Shop was one of its most lucrative games of last year, selling 2.8M copies on all systems.
