FIFA 09’s retail wrangle with Activision’s World At War continues apace as the EA football sim reclaims the UK’s all-format chart.

On Christmas week FIFA ended World At War’s five-week reign at the top of the charts, while the following week saw Treyarch’s shooter recover the top spot. Now, after both titles experience a plunge in sales, FIFA 09 sits ahead of the pack.

Both titles' decline in sales (FIFA falling 41% with World at War plunging 50%) were indicative of the rest of the chart, with Nintendo’s Mario Kart Wii (now eighth) taking a particularly sharp 60% sales slide. In fact, only a single game in Chart Track’s all-format top 40 experienced a rise in sales; Nintendo’s newly released 100 Classic Book Collection, which enters the charts at number 27.

EA will note that its disappointing Need For Speed title has shown some buoyancy, remaining in third but now only a rather negligible 5,000 weekly sales behind World at War. Activision’s Guitar Hero: World Tour, meanwhile, moves to its highest position yet at number four.

But World Tour’s three-place ascension wasn’t the biggest climb of the week, with Sega’s Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games rising four places, taking the DS and Wii titles closer to their two million combined-sales target.

Elsewhere, Quantum of Solace drops a single place, Nintendo’s Wii Play climbs to fifth, Sonic Unleashed holds steady at tenth, and while Tomb Raider falls out of the top ten, Ubisoft’s rather beautiful Far Cry 2 makes a welcome return to it.

All Format top-ten provided by Chart Track follows:

1. FIFA 09
2. Call of Duty: World at War
3. Need For Speed: Undercover
4. Guitar Hero: World Tour
5. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
6. Wii Play
7. Far Cry 2
8. Mario Kart Wii
9. Quantum of Solace
10. Sonic Unleashed
