Over eight million unique users have registered for Sony Online Entertainment’s MMO Free Realms, the developer has announced.
While free-to-play since launching last April, the family-friendly PC title utilises a microtransaction model that allows users to purchase in-game items or to upgrade to a membership status.
"Free Realms is more than just a virtual world for our players; it is a portal for imagination," said SOE president John Smedley. "Our job as developers is to listen to and predict what they want and give them the tools that inspire and compel them to share their experiences with eight million others."
Sony didn’t reveal the size of the game's current active player base.
Smedley said last September that a PS3 version of Free Realms would release in 2010, “toward the middle of the year", and that it is expected to support PlayStation Eye functionality.
