Game Freezes Wage Rates

Retailer says the tough decision was ìprudent given the uncertain consumer environment."

Retailer Game has confirmed to Edge that it has frozen staff pay rates at 2008 levels.

"In line with many employers, Game Group has held rates of pay at 2008 levels,” said Game Group UK & Ireland COO Terry Scicluna. “While this was a difficult decision to take, Game felt it was prudent given the uncertain consumer environment."

Last week the retailer posted record results for the financial year ended January 31, 2009, with turnover up 32 percent to £1.97bn and profit up 68 percent to £126.2m.

Game chairman Peter Lewis described the results as “exceptional,” but a Game spokesperson said: “It's important to remember that the results just announced were for last year (to 31 January 2009). Employee bonuses for that year will be paid at the top rate - to reward the outstanding individual contributions made to the group's performance in 2008.”
