GameFly Swoops In for Shacknews

Videogame rental house Gamefly has acquired independent gaming website Shacknews and its file downloading site, Fileshack.

GameFly co-founder Sean Spector said in a statement on Shacknews, "We purchased Shacknews because it’s a great site. We believe we can help expand its reach–we’re not looking to twist and turn the site into something else."

Steve Gibson, who founded Shacknews in 1995, said the decision to sell was not based on any financial difficulties. No financial terms have been revealed.

According to a report on, Gibson will be leaving the site, while his business partner Maarten Goldstein will stay on board for at least the short term.

GameFly is a Netflix-style service that lets gamers choose desired rental games online and receive games in the mail, rotating them out for other titles for a set monthly fee.
