UK specialist retail outlet Gamestation will open its landmark 250th store tomorrow.
The newest store is located in Sheffield’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Along with the announcement, Gamestation CEO Martyn Gibbs commented that the company is the fastest-growing games retailer in the UK.
Back in May last year, the company was bought by then-rival retail outlet GAME from Gamestation’s holding company Blockbuster for some £74 million. GAME itself has around 1,100 stores worldwide.
Edge readers who live close to Meadowhall should note that the first 50 customers who enter the store on Friday morning’s grand opening will receive a bag of freebies. The company is also holding a party tonight for industry members.
"Meadowhall is the perfect location for our 250th store due to its huge footfall and catchment area," added Gibbs.
There were two GAME stores in Meadowhall. One has always been GAME and the other was an old Electronics Boutique that was rebranded but now that store has closed. I'm not sure where the new Gamestation is but I highly doubt it will be where the old Electronics Boutique/Game was because that is directly opposite the original GAME store (seriously they co-existed simultaneously for years). Therefore I am pretty confident this will be a brand new store and not just a GAME store with a new sign. Since the takeover GAME has done a lot to keep the two different anyway. I'm really annoyed I missed the opening deals! Wonder what was in the goody bag...
It would have been more impressive if it was still in the hand of independent owners. But alas it's changed hands a couple of times since those good old days.
It was owned by Blockbuster, but more recently bought by once bitter rivals Game. So that begs the question, is this the 250th store or just a old Game store rebranded? Can anyone from Sheffield confirm?
