Leading US retailer GameStop began selling copies of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 this weekend ahead of the highly anticipated shooter’s official release on November 10.

The company’s management said that it had authorised select stores to begin selling reserved copies of the game in order to counter a loss of sales to other retailers who had broken the title's street date.

“This past weekend, GameStop made the decision to break street date and sell reserved copies of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in select markets where other retailers had broken street date. Our decision followed many conversations with Activision and was an effort to protect our customer base,” the retailer’s VP of corporate communications, Chris Olivera, told Kotaku.

Numerous retailers across the US and Europe began selling Modern Warfare 2 this weekend, according to multiple internet reports, but GameStop is by far the largest to go against Activision’s wishes.

"Activision has not given any retailer permission to sell Modern Warfare 2 prior to the Nov. 10 street date. The company fully supports the Nov. 10 street date," the publisher said in a statement.

Poor little Gamestop is worried about some random mom and pop retailers trying to make a buck over the giant with exclusive bonus's on top of massive financial backing/advertising? If I was Bobby K I'd call em up and go ballistic. Bad form on Gamestops part, but the gamers are happy so I guess it doesn't matter.

According to an advert I saw last night, Sainsburys are selling for 26 quid here in the UK. I will be off to check that out this evening. I wasn't even going to buy it (haven't played MW1), but for 26 quid i won't complain!

I got my pre-ordered Special Edition of Dragon Age: Origins at GAME sold the day it was released, despite the fact I had it pre-ordered and told them that I was coming in the next day to get it.

Got to wait for another week to get one, where they will "hold on to it" until I arrive and pick it up.

Fuck ups.

EDIT: Congrats on the game

$59 - thats a disgrace. Why are they price gouging this game. Why are Activision kicking the fans in the nuts with this pricing. Its pure greed!!!!

FAIL!!!

ABSOLTE FUCKING FAIL!!!!!

Why can't they release the game all over the bloody world then if it's just "select" shops?!

God damn it, it's this shit that broke the Demigod servers when it was flooded by pirates and the servers weren't meant to be up and fully running!

Yeah, that's right, I went there. Fuck you Gamestop! I was a Beta tester for that game!!! >:O

God damn it!

Get over it, its a game being released 48/72 hours early

Yeah, something similiar happened to Demigod as well. It bombed, not solely due to an early release, but certainly played a role and it reflected in reviews!
