GDC 2011: Infamous 2 To Feature User-Generated Missions

Infamous 2 will allow players to create their own missions and upload them for the community to play.

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Sucker Punch development director Chris Zimmerman said the studio had been working on the secret feature for the past two years.

“Sandbox games like Infamous are a tonne of fun,” he said. “There’s a whole city to explore, and we provide lots of stuff to do in the city, but no matter how many missions and mini-missions and systemic opportunities and branching story lines we add to the game, eventually the story ends. We thought Infamous 2 would be better if it didn’t end.”

Zimmerman said there weren’t many limits to the sorts of missions players will be able to build as they’ll have access to the same set of characters, creatures and props featured in the game. A trailer (below) for the feature highlighted defence, escort, search and destroy, and survival missions. Zimmerman said stealth, platforming and racing missions were also possible, along with the creation of minigames like skeet shooting or car throwing.

“User-generated missions show up in the world just like regular missions,” he added. “When you walk up to them, you see the PSN tag of the mission creator, plus extra information like the mission’s current rating. And back at Sucker Punch headquarters, we’ll be watching – missions that get high scores will get promoted to the Featured Missions list, and will end up in just about everyone’s copy of New Marais.”

The developer also announced that a limited Infamous 2 user-generated content public beta will commence in early April. Details of how to sign up will be revealed on March 14.
