Mojang founder and Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson and lead designer Jakob Porser have revealed Scrolls, a digital collectable card and board game, at GDC 2011. Despite not yet having finished Mojang’s first game yet, the developer appears keen to get on with the next, enlisting the help of Penny Arcade’s Jerry Holkins and Jnkboy for the games story and art respectively.
Scrolls already has an official website. Writing on the site, Porser describes the game as offering “a new and unique game play where you fight to outmaneuver [sic] your opponent on the battlefield [a chess-style game board] using the destructive powers in your collection of magical scrolls [cards]."
The game has been in the works for the past five years, according to Porser. “[Scrolls is] a game we desperately wanted to play, but [were] unable to as it had not yet been developed,” he says. “The game we envisioned had elements from the collectible card game genre as well as from traditional board games. It [will] be a strategic game with a strong foundation in tactical game play but with a touch of random and chance guaranteeing a never ending stream of curve balls.”
Minecraft alpha purchasers will be offered a limited free alpha later this year, while a public beta will follow.
