Gearbox is working on Halo 4 as a launch title for the next Xbox, according to a rumor in the October issue of the US Official Xbox Magazine, Joystiq reports.

The FPS specialist, which previously handled the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved (pictured), confirmed in February that it is working on a major unannounced project, while Microsoft owns the rights to the Halo series, not creator Bungie.

“I’ve started a new project. It’s big. It’s, like, look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger kind of big," wrote Gearbox president Randy Pitchford in a blog post earlier this year. “When you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one.”

Gearbox is known to be currently working on Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Borderlands and Aliens: Colonel Marines, while its website lists an unannounced title as coming soon.

I'm not sure if I'm happy or upset about this.

Neither Halo sequel lived up to my expectations. Excellent? Fun? Yes, but still not what I hoped for.

Here's hoping.
