Epic’s Gears of War 2 has taken worldwide sales of 2m over the weekend, according to a statement released by Microsoft.

Following the game’s release in 20 countries, Microsoft has also stated that 1.5m individual gamers played Gears of War 2 over Xbox Live last weekend, “racking up a total 15m gameplay hours and helping set a new record for concurrent Live players.”

Major Nelson’s blog has also stated that the game had collectively unlocked over 19m achievements.

“We were so excited to launch Gears of War 2 on the same day all around the world, something virtually unheard of in the games business,” says Cliff Bleszinski, design director at Epic Games. “We wanted our fans, no matter where they live, to have a shared experience on day one, and that’s exactly what’s happened.”

By contrast, recent reports show that Far Cry 2 has sold over 1m, and Bethesda’s Fallout 3 had shipped close to 4.7m copies worldwide within the space of a week.

Interactive movie blockbuster first, game second (pushover end-game boss), Epic wanted you to stick to the narrative as tightly as a Locust's ass to a Brumak's back. As curious as it sounds, they actually wanted you, the player, to FINISH the game - not be stuck perched on top of an impossible difficulty spike, thereby disengaging you from the rollercoaster experience. And what a rollercoaster ride it was! Cheers Epic, this is how it's done.

I thought the pacing was perfect. The end boss could have been a bit more difficult, it was still pretty cool though (I wouldn't have minded if the difficulty of the final boss was around what the fish was, maybe a little easier than the fish). Although, I didn't mind an easy boss after what was at times a pretty difficult campaign on hard. Now I need to knock out insane (or whatever its called). Cheers indeed.

Well done Epic and MS. Finished the campaign on co-op on hard last night. Campaign was a lot more fun than Gears 1 and the achievments are more campaign oriented this time with only a handful for multiplayer. I like the trend nowadays where kills/rank/stats go across all gametypes and not just multiplayer. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 did it best, CoDWaw from what I read does it as well. A lot of us spend more time in campaign or finish the campaign before going into multiplayer and its nice to have something to show for it so you don't look like such I newb when you finally do make it over to multiplayer.

Did I mention the graphics are sick?
