Atari Inc has confirmed that Ghostbusters: The Video Game will receive a multiplatform release in the US on June 16, as originally planned.

The company moved to clarify its publishing plans for the title after it emerged that the game will only be released on PS3 and PS2 in Europe and PAL regions next month, and not on Xbox 360, PC, Wii and DS.

"Ghostbusters: The Video Game is one of our most significant worldwide releases this summer,” said Atari Inc CEO Jim Wilson. “Through Atari's North America publishing business and alongside our partners at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, we have a strategically diversified approach to maximize a title of this magnitude on a global basis."

A PSP version of the game is scheduled for worldwide launch in autumn 2009 and will be published by SCEE in Europe.

Atari is also expected to release the game in Europe on non-Sony platforms later in the year.

I think sony went for this timed european exclusive thinking the ghostbusters blu ray and game combo may encourage ps3 sales in europe.

Do Sony really think that by having an exclusive on this game it is going to do anything for them?? I can't see anyone wanting it so badly that they cannot wait for it on their Xbox or Wii and so go and buy a PS3.

Also as I'm not a PS3 owner myself I don't for sure, but will PS3 owners really value this exclusivity, will they care or even notice? Probably not!!

I agree - very odd handling of an "exclusive". Even in Europe the exclusive period is only for 3-4 months (the press release states it will be available on the other platforms for Holiday 2009). The money probably could have been spent better elsewhere than paying for 3-4 months exclusivity on a low profile game in a second tier market.

That's pretty damn weird and really makes Atari seem like a less than serious player and Sony just a bit silly.

Ha! A "Europe-Only" exclusive?

Way to break a five Sony!

"We have a strategically diversified approach to maximize a title of this magnitude on a global basis."

So you want to maximize sales by not releasing the game in 3 major consoles (4 if you count the PC) that seems like the way to go... no Wii, DS and 360 version available will surely maximize the global sales...

That's a PR damage control FAIL in my book.

Potential sales damage control? Hmm...
