Organisers have announced that last weekend’s Global Game Jam (GGJ) 2011 saw almost 1,500 new games created in 48 hours.
In total 6,500 people took part in the event, which took place across 173 locations in 44 countries worldwide, comfortably exceeding the 5,000 attendees organisers were expecting.
“Once again we broke our own record for the single largest game jam ever,” says an announcement on the Jam’s website. “Thank you to all the participants and organisers for making it so great. We hope to be even better next year.”
As we reported last week, Keita Takahashi delivered the event’s keynote address to all participating venues via YouTube. It’s every bit as leftfield as you’d expect from the Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby boy creator, six minutes of weirdness in which he uses glove puppets, Russian dolls, a broom, a theremin and his toes to get his message across, as you can see below.
Many of the 1,492 games created during Global Game Jam 2011 can now be downloaded, played and rated at the Jam’s website.
