Sony used its Gamescom press conference this evening to announce a global PS3 price cut effective immediately.
SCEE president Andrew House said the cost of the 160GB system has been reduced to €249 in Europe, $249 in the US and ¥24,980 in Japan. A Sony spokesperson later told CVG the console’s price has been cut from £249 to £199 in the UK.
Sony told Kotaku the 320GB PS3 now retails for €349, $299 and ¥29,980. In the UK, its price has been reduced from £299 to £249.
Sony also announced European release plans for the PlayStation branded 24-inch 3D HDTV previously confirmed for the US market at E3. Capable of displaying separate, full-screen images to two players wearing 3D glasses, the monitor will launch in Europe this autumn for €499.

4No profit for Sony then. Is it worth it to catch Microsoft?
Now watch Microsoft cut the price of the 360...
No, Sony are still making profit.

Hope that Microsoft don't cut the price of the 360.
Here in Portugal a few days ago I talked to a Microsoft Xbox promotor and he said that the problem in some countries is they can only see Sony and don't give a try on the Xbox.
And I think it's a bit sad that because of it gamers who play with one console or the other are always in conflict.
Too little, too late. By being earlier to market Microsoft have held a production cost advantage over Sony for the entire generation. They will cut the 360 price in the run up to xmas and outsell the ps3 again.
