The upcoming trial between Paramount Pictures and the estate of Godfather author Mario Puzo has been called off, as both parties have reportedly settled for an agreement out of court.
Lawyers representing the estate of Puzo – who passed away ten years ago – initially filed for a $1 million lawsuit back in June after alleging it was owed profits from the commercial success of EA’s Godfather game.
Now both groups have ended their conflict with an out-of-court settlement. The figure of the settlement was not disclosed figure. “We think it's a terrific settlement,” said Bert Fields, a Puzo estate lawyer. “This involved one of the most admired films of all time.”
EA was not the subject of the lawsuit, as Puzo’s estate lawyers had targeted Paramount Pictures which licensed the game to Electronic Arts. Paramount Pictures had denied it owed any money.
Back in 2005, Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola Spoke of his disdain for Paramount in allowing the production of the Godfather game, adding that he had not been informed of it until the wheels were fully in motion.
