Google Acquires Developer SocialDeck

Canadian social game maker behind titles like Shake And Spell and Pet Hero purchased by web giant for an undisclosed sum.

Google has acquired social game developer SocialDeck for an undisclosed sum.

The Canadian-based firm was founded in 2008 and has launched several titles for iPhone, Facebook and BlackBerry including Shake And Spell, Pet Hero and Color Connect. The company's game's achieved more than one million mobile downloads last year.

SocialDeck says that its social gaming platform technology “enables simultaneous game play across multiple mobile devices and social networks” and “facilitates viral content discovery, distribution and monetization”.

“SocialDeck's team and technology is a perfect addition to our current team of engineers in Waterloo, to continue to innovate in the social and mobile web,” Google Canada spokeswoman Wendy Rozeluk told The Globe and Mail.

News of the acquisition will further fuel rumours that Google is creating games for a new social networking service it’s building to rival Facebook. Earlier this month Google bought social game developer Slide for $182 million, shortly before it reportedly acquired Jambool and its in-game virtual currency payments product Social Gold. It is also said to have recently invested as much as $200 million in FarmVille-maker Zynga.
