Grand Theft Auto V will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in Spring 2013, if a leaked photo of a retail display is to be believed.
Polish fansite GTA-Five.pl obtained the below photos of a display inviting customers to pre-order Rockstar’s keenly awaited open-world crime caper. The Xbox 360, Xbox Live, and PlayStation 3 logos are shown, suggesting PC and Wii U players are set to be disappointed – at least at launch.
While Rockstar has yet to confirm a release window or target platforms, Spring 2013 would make an awful lot of sense. All of the company’s releases since 2010 – Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire and the recent Max Payne 3 – have been released in May.
But it may arrive even earlier than that. Publisher Take-Two has told investors it expects to make between $1.7 billion and $1.8 billion in the fiscal year ending March 31; while its release slate contains big-hitters like Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13 and Bioshock Infinite, last year’s revenue was barely half of this year’s target, at $825.8 million.
There’s a lot of ground to be made up, then, and few games have the selling power of a new Grand Theft Auto. Coming this late in a console generation, Rockstar and Take-Two would be forgiven for expecting GTAV to be one of the best-selling games of all time.
Details have been thin on the ground since GTA V was announced this time last year – since that debut trailer there’s only been a handful of screenshots – but last week, alongside a previously unseen piece of concept art, Rockstar promised more info was on the way in November, and it’s on the cover of the next issue of Game Informer magazine. Confirmation of that release date, then, may be only days away.
