Take-Two has announced that it will release a PSP version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.
The Rockstar Leeds developed game will be available at retail on UMD and as a download from the PlayStation Network in North America and Europe this autumn.
"Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series," said Rockstar founder Sam Houser.
Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton added: "Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms. We're excited to welcome the critically acclaimed Chinatown Wars to the outstanding line-up of great games headed to the PSP platform this fall."
While Chinatown Wars was critically acclaimed, early sales disappointed. Having released on March 17 in the US, the title sold just 88,704 copies during the month, while in the UK it entered the all formats chart in sixth place, with opening week sales only around half of the launch week total achieved by the previous handheld GTA title, Vice City Stories on PSP. Nevertheless, Take-Two CEO Ben Feder today told MCV that “DS titles take a longer time to sell, the good ones have long legs and we expect this game to behave in the same way.”

I at first hated Chinatown Wars for ds, I didn't want to accept that Rockstar had turned to Nintendo. I tried it out and thought it was mediocre, I just couldn't stand it but recently I heard that this was coming to PSP. As you can imagine, I was very disappointed. Why can't we have San Andreas Stories??? Well I decided that I may as well try out Chinatown Wars again to see if maybe I was overlooking something...
Well, after about an hour of free roaming I decided that I'm actually excited that it's coming to PSP. Liberty City is vast and although I do not like the simplified gameplay and top down view, I'm sure I can adjust to it and will find it fun. Thank god it's coming to a widescreen! :D
Translation:
I hated it because it was on Nintendo's handheld. Now I have decided to love it because it's coming to Sony's.
lol! That is awesome!
The DS version was my favourite GTA outside of vice city. I think a lot of the touchscreen games could be mapped to an analogue stick, and some of them were just irritating and needed getting rid of anyway (paying the infernal tollbooth every single time was just an annoyance, let's be honest).
I'm interested in how they will convert all the touch screen elements to the PSP... A lot of 'tap X rappidly' like mini games?
This'll be an interesting experiment -- to see if a mature rated game that was an exclusive to DS will actually sell better on the PSP.
It almost has to. It's a a big name title on a system that hardly has any games, let alone any decent ones.
I'd be surprised if it didn't sell better.
Sorry to go all dreamhunk here, but:

I apparantly have to stab you in the eye now as well.
If you remove all the touchscreen stuff, the game is missing a huge portion of what makes it fun.
I'm not sure how they intend to deal with that.
Why don't they just make it a PSP-GO killer app.
Then they wouldn't have to ditch the "touch-screen" elements...Oh wait...right, I forgot
I don't think they're concerned with that (I'm willing to bet some of the functions will be mapped to analog stick moves and others completely removed), I think they just want to make their critically acclaimed game available on a platform where it'll actually sell. That's not a dig at Nintendo, it's the truth.
Nintendo & Rockstar and correct in saying that GTA will continue to sell longer than most despite the initial sales.
It's pretty much been the top game on Play.com for some time and I bet you'll find that's the same amongst other shops selling DS games.

It's even beating Professor Layton & Pokemon at the moment. Both of which probably had better launches but steeper drop-offs.
I think it's a case of trying to make more money (sensible) and finding a cheap way to support the PSP.
What if it doesn't sell as much as the DS version or only marginally better?
If you look at the other two PSP GTA games, which were 2 of the best selling titles on the PSP, I think it's a pretty good bet that it will exceed the meager DS version sales. Nothing is 100% of course, but I think it's safe to say that there is probably a higher percentage of PSP owners that would buy a GTA game, than there are DS owners.
That's true... however, it remains to be seen if the PSP userbase will embrace a top-down, 2D-esque GTA. We'll see though.
That's a fairpoint!! I wonder if anyone told Rockstar ?
Well given that they did Liberty/Vice City Stories, and that was fun I'm sure they'll find a way.
Presumably the PSP version will contain none of the touchscreen shenanigans I enjoyed so much on the DS.
Good stuff, always nice to see games out on the PSP.
Especially from a team like Rockstar Leeds.
