Guinness World Records has named Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 the most successful entertainment launch of all time.
The record-keeping organisation said that it had verified the Infinity Ward-developed shooter’s first day sales of more than $401.6 million (£242.4 million), breaking the record previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV with $310 million (£159 million).
"This achievement is a reflection of the support from our community of fans around the world," said Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling. "The Call Of Duty series and Modern Warfare have been our passion – we’ve dedicated our lives to giving our best, so it’s an honour to be recognised by setting a new standard among all entertainment properties."
Publisher Activision said previously that the game, which released on November 10, 2009, generated $550 million worldwide in just five days, shattering theatrical box office and game sales records.
