You're hardly going to be able to win an argument on which game has the best set list are you? It's too personal, nice to see Everlong, Soul Doubt and Santeria on there though, I'll be looking forward to playing them. Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter is a good little pick as well.
Dreading the missus picking Bon Jovi continually though.
Agreed, the songs are just personal preference, that's why I'm just getting both games.
What! How can they not have Slipknot in there.?
Chevelle - definitely not a cross between Tool and Korn... More like catchy garbage.
And concerning the set list, I guess its okay. I'm not going to buy this though. I threw up a little when I read the words "Bullet For My Valentine".
Ok, some of Chevelle's earlier stuff, the lead singer sounds IDENTICAL to James Maynard. Like when I thought A Perfect Circle's lead singer sounded just like him (then I found out it was him) except this time its not him. And some of the songs are bass heavy with very low distorted guitar (just like old-school Korn, and at times the way he sings, with angst, anger, sadness, but quiet, very John Davis-like. And their best songs were ones that WEREN'T singles. And if you using their last two CDs as example...don't, they suck. Especially the last one. They changed producers, idiots. Any way, wonder whats next is a very good album, I don't know how someone can think their garbage (unless they've only heard their new stuff).
Silversun Pickups! At The Drive-In! Interpol! so many others... this is pretty awesome. I've never owned a Guitar Hero.. and the ones I have played before, the limited good songs have dissapointed me. This one looks awesome though. At least, for my personal taste in music.
I must say, i'm disappointed to see so many bands from GH3 on here again this time. I should think there's no reason to use them again already. Is there that little variety of labels willing to pony up the licensing that you have to use the same bands less then a year later?
I'm mildly symapathetic, but the more rhythm games that come out, the less new there is to select from, and a lot of past releases will leave gamers wanting certain songs from the same band I thought it was almost guaranteed that GH:WT or RB2 woudl have Smells Like Teen Spirit. It seems like all bets are off, but enough of Harmonix's "don't go for the obivous" philosophy of the first two GH titles is still intact, apparently. Though Activison semes intent on breaking this mentality first (Puprple Haze and Schism were obvious, even though i love both artists. Would've preferred Machine Gun and Aenema respectively. Vicarious is also an obvious one, being a fairly recent chart-topper Not to leave RB2 out of criticism, though -- Distrubed's Down With The Sickness? ugh!).
I think Harmonix has the right idea, though We're moving towards a 'platform', and Activision's band-centric titles are a dated approach. People want selection, and don't want to be forced into buying many tracks just to get that one or two that are great (I am certainly doubting I will chuck out $60 just to get a few Tool and Hendrix tracks.) Open, a la carte DLC is the way of hte future. and I think at some pont Activision is going to suck it up and acknowledge that. Though, not until the massive consumer base Harmonix built off of GH2 realizes that they're being ripped off by Activision. I don't see that hpapening for another two years, though.
"but the more rhythm games that come out, the less new there is to select from, and a lot of past releases will leave gamers wanting certain songs from the same band"
OK, I can see certain bands being popular and fans want them in each game, but less new there is to select from? Dude, I read in an article there are over 2 million bands on Myspace and there must be 100 000s of bands that been signed to record labels and released albums over the years. You can't tell me that with millions of bands to choose from, there is less new out there. I'll give you the point about certain popular bands being wanted more by gamers though.
RB2 did the same thing. They have songs that were on GH2 and GH3, and some of the DLC for GH is on RB2 as well.
Half this set list I find disposable. I really don't think I can endure the inferior gameplay and art direction when I can better spend my $60 on Rock Band DLC, cherry-picking the creme de la creme, and end up with a much better game overall than Activsion can ever give me.
Well, you could say the same about RB2's set list. There's going to be some really good stuff, and there's going to be some crap. Its only natural that you're not going to like every song. You can't please everyone. As far as art direction (that's just personal preferance, although GH3's characters look like something out of the muppet babies) and inferior gameplay...I think that's debatable. I also think GHWT will have much better DLC than GH3 did.
Metallica: Death Magnetic is out today for GH3 and WT (forward compatible), full album with two bonus tracks with modified solos, probably stuffed full of hammer ons and pull offs just for you omega.
And next week Rock Band is getting yet another album (as oppose to GH3's first), Megadeth's "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" An already proven album. If Activision really loved you they would've released one of Metallica's classic albums, not their latest, a "please buy it and love it!" plea. (granted the oft rumored GH Metallica edition may take care of that).
And I would say the RB2 set list is much better -- at lest most of the artists have been HEARD of before, and existed prior to the past 3 years. Activision's set list is a clear attempt to cull the masses with the 'i just heard this on the radio' mentality, most evident by the inclusion of emo bands and foreign sensations to appeal to international consumers' pop interests. Again, I'll grant them that they try to appeal to more hardcore music fans with the likes of Hendrix and Tool, but for the most part i feel they are flipping us the bird in favor of radio listeners who go with the flow rather than use music that plays well. (On that note -- Chevelle sucks! you'll agree in a few years when you're listening to somethign else!)
As for gamplay, we've had that discussion already, lol.
But DLC wins out in the end. I can buy the prefab list that Activison gives me, along with prefab packs and albums where I must buy *all* the tracks, or I can go wiht RB's superior a la carte selection and build my own setlist, for a much cheaper price. The $60 I spend on the DLC will always beat out the $60 I can spend on GH:WT or its respective DLC selection, which is undersupplied and overpriced. It's about more bang for my buck at this point (especially when a lot of tracks are overlapping in the games, 16 is joystiq's count), and RB's giving me that.
And hey, I love my hammer-ons and pull-offs. I just prefer them to be in-synch with the music! Can't get that from Neversoft's GH series.
Well, I can't argue most of your points. I think GHWT will (as they have promised) compete with RB2 when it comes to DLC. I agree, it'd be nice to only buy exactly what you want when it comes to DLC. The "packs" in GH3 force you to buy all three songs. Maybe they'll fix that, if not, then I'll have usually 2 out of the 3 songs I like and 1 I don't.
Gameplay...yeah.
I read a review for RB2 http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/909/909663p1.html and it sounds like they increased the difficulty for guitars (yay). As I've said before, with the less forgiving note timings RB1 was still significantly easier on expert than GH3. So, the increased difficulty will be a welcome addition.
Speaking of hammer ons and pull offs, it seems as though the first signs of neversoft's attempt at fixing fluffed up solos with extra hammer ons/pull offs is evident in Death Magnetic. I played all but 2-3 songs, and the solos are CLEARLY less clustered with super close hammer on and pull off sweeps. It caught me off guard as I was able to nail much of the solos on without having to "fake" really hitting the notes. I was able to hammer on/pull off long solo sections without missing notes and frantically struming to catch up. It was easier, but not in a way that nerfed it, it was still pretty challenging. Maybe neversoft is holding true to their promise of fixing that?
By the way, chevelle doesn't suck, not at all. They're like a cross between tool's soft vocals and Korn's bass heavy tracks and yelling. An awesome blend. (at least their older album, their last album blew shit, their middle album was ok, but wonder what's next was a beast).
I like the set list much better than RB2 as well, but where's chevelle?
Hopefully out taking guitar lessons
Dude, will you stop bashing Chevelle hahaha!!!
Assassin.
Awesome; I must say I'm looking forward to this a lot more than Rock Band 2.
