Hardware sales slumped in Japan during the week ended June 7, from 144, 521 to 111, 558 units.
The decline was primarily due to a drop in DSi demand. Having raced ahead of the pack the previous week with over 65,000 sales, Nintendo’s latest handheld sold just shy of 39,000 units.
Sales of all other platforms declined marginally, excluding Xbox 360. Microsoft’s console saw a 2,500 unit jump to take it above PS2 and DS Lite in the rankings, according to research firm Media Create.
DSi – 38,783
PSP – 29,070
Wii – 17,177
PS3 – 10,173
Xbox 360 – 6,625
DS Lite – 5,664
PS2 – 4,096
Why do you always divide DS and DSi?
They are same console, same software, no sense.
Don't worry, I won't give you a Rage-a-Thon.
The PS3 was marketed poorly in the US. While there are many, many fans of the system - PSONE & PS2 owners, potiential new customers had this device marketed to them as the cheapest Blu-Ray player. For months, games were severely downplayed. Even now many new PS3 owners are Home Theater owners looking for a playback device.
From what I've seen in other regions, I work in PR & Marketing, everyone else did it better.
-lol-
Its a pretty sad state of affairs when you feel you have to put a disclaimer at the bottom of your post. :)
Interesting, I'm in the UK and the marketing over here has been terrible too.
The last game I actually saw Sony market really heavily was Uncharted: Drake Fortune... No, I'm being serious. They don't actually seem to advertise the PS3 at all.
I keep reading about this big marketing push they're going to do in the UK for Killzone, Infamous etc. I have seen hardly any, and I'm pretty sure I fall in the middle of their target audience (Male, Late 20s, Spend a fortune on games), and watch the appropriate TV channels etc (Dave, E3, Channel 4 etc).
Very poor, and in my opinion, their biggest downfall.
True enough on the disclaimer. We have to tread very carefully on this thread. If it gets the slightest bit aggressive, Dream's going to come in & with one Hunk Smash!; he'll shatter this post to pieces.
I wonder if Sony thought they would just "take" the UK. It's no secret Microsoft practically ignored Europe at the original Xbox launch. I know the advertising here was reactionary. The original Xbox couldn't play DVD's "out of the gate;" so Sony attacked this weakness with the PS3.
The problem really boils down to the fact that I don't own a PS3, & I can't name a lot of good games. People who do own on can prattle off plenty of games they enjoy, but it looks like you have to be "in the scene" to know about them. You won't get any new customers that way.
You're a horrible man Indrema "Hunk Smash!"
I like it. :D
They were big on Resistance 2 marketing -- faux newspaper pages in the UK were sold around real ones, so it looked like those papers were reporting about alien invasions. And that enormous building in San Francisco, I think.
Man! Those numbers do suck. I think more people bought a PS3 in the US, & that's saying something. The console's basically considered a joke in the states.
It is?
Agree, those are bad numbers!
Now, I'm not from the US, but does your last comment mean that both the 360 and the PS3 are considered a Joke in the states? NPD for May (from this site):
wii - 289,000
360 - 175,000
PS3 - 131,000.With the 360 at the lowest price point and the PS3 at nearly double it?
;)
(Light hearted bit of fun btw)
