Heavy Rain Clears One Million Sales

Game has performed well ahead of expectations, according to Quantic Dream co-CEO David Cage.

Quantic Dream co-CEO David Cage has revealed that Heavy Rain has sold over one million copies, exceeding the expectations of many.

Speaking to German site Play3 (via CVG), he said: "We have sold more than one million copies of Heavy Rain worldwide. That was a surprise to many, since estimated sales were between 200,000 to 300,000 units.

“We estimate that by the end of the year, we will have sold 1.5 million copies, and are very pleased with the reception," he added.

Launched in February exclusively for PS3, Heavy Rain topped the UK all formats chart in its debut week.

"Heavy Rain is not a videogame anymore in my mind because it breaks with most of the traditional paradigms, but it's fully interactive,” Cage said ahead of the title’s release, also noting: "If the format becomes successful we will probably have to find a different name for this type of experience.”

Last month he also suggested that Heavy Rain’s commercial success had sent “a strong message to the game industry”, proving that publishers should take more risks with experimental projects.

"The commercial success of the game shows one thing: gamers are not who we thought they are. They are older, eager for something new, ready for more sophistication than what most games have to offer… The market is now ready to see videogames evolve to a more mature and meaningful media."
