Rift developer Trion Worlds' latest project is Defiance, a massively multiplayer online shooter for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 based on, and linked to, a TV show of the same name from US channel SyFy.
Set 30 years in the future, Defiance casts players as survivors of a universal war, trying to build a new society amidst the devastation. While little has been revealed about the game, Trion promises to combine "the intense action of a triple-A console shooter with persistence, scale and customisation of an MMOG."
The TV show is, of course, set in the same universe, and we're told that events in the show will impact the game world, and vice versa. A character in the TV show might set out on a quest during one episode, and will appear in the game as an NPC, but quite how in-game events can meaningfully impact a weekly TV show that is, presumably, written and produced some way in advance is another matter entirely.
