Hints of "Next Metal Gear"

About six months after the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 for PS3, Kojima Productions is hinting at a new Metal Gear game.

A simple Flash website, which features a cryptic bright green equation against a black background, teases, "A Next Metal Gear Is..."

The easiest conclusion to jump to is that a Metal Gear game is coming to Xbox 360, when taking into consideration Xbox-like green color scheme and the last character's resemblance to the Xbox 360 power button (although that symbol is used across various kinds of electronic products).

But that conclusion doesn't seem to take into consideration the significance of the "i" and the "!". Rampant speculation has tied the "i" to the Wii, DSi or the iPhone, and the exclamation point may be a reference to the Metal Gear Ac!d collectible card-style videogame.

The URL includes the letters "mgst", leading some to believe that the "t" could stand for "touch," although it could possibly just stand for "teaser."

For now, it all remains speculation.

Im going to air what I think about this picture, as much I want it to stay with the ps3 I can not deny that the picture suggests a Xbox 360 port but there is no where on the picture that suggests that this picture is about metal gear SOLID since it only refers to Metal Gear. this either means 2 things, a compeletly new Metal Gear or an AC!D game. Now correct me if im wrong but:-

Both Metal Gear games, Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear AC!D both fill in the equation on the left, the i in solid and the ! in AC!D, now that could only mean Solid + AC!D = universal power symbol with exclamation mark, this to me suggests maybe a new game with both aspects of solid and acid. like MGS4 engine with AC!D type game play since the result shows more dominant to AC!D with the exclamation mark.

Thats my two cents

What I get from this Image is just "They are up to something on no matter a new MGS or localization or...". It just want to let us keep an eyes on them. Good way for promotion and maintain.

i-Phone + Metal Gear Ac!D = Symbol

or short

i + ! = Symbol

So my money is on another portable version. What I don't grasp is that fanboy rage over fading console exclusivity. As long as a game comes out for the console I own, it's a win. If a franchise I like comes out for multiple platforms it's also a win, since the developer makes more money and a sequel is more likely. Win-Win.

Somebody should check it Konami stock prices went up after this teaser. A multi-platform Metal Gear would most probably increase its unit sales.

Oh, how I would love to play Metal Gear Solid on my Xbox 360. Unfortunately I won't be buying a PS3 anytime soon. Or a Wii, DSi, PSP, or iPhone.

Do I even dare hope the next Metal Gear Solid is coming to Xbox 360?

No, the potential let-down would be too much. Welcome to the Wii, Metal Gear Solid. Fare thee well.

No one will doubt the financial sense it makes to port it, and Sony has said it does not pay for 3rd party exclusive. so there may not be a Microsoft style monetary incentive to keep it PS3 exclusive. MAYBE there was a 12 month exclusivity arrangement, maybe not, we won't know for another 6 months. Didn't Ryan Payton get a job with MS Game Studios? Interesting.

For full disclosure, I'm a PS3 fanatic and have been a Sony bitch for 13 years. Doesn't stop me being realistic though.

Pretty simple really:

Next Metal Gear is...(one of the following i.e. i+!) Wii/DSi/iPhone/iPodTouch = On (the latter being world standard symbol for powering a device ON, thus being green).

gwsmokey's picture

Same button that is on the PS3. Heck... the game sold well on the PS3 so it might be the next one.

Thats funny that symbol is on the PS3 power button also plus Ive heard rumors of MGS5 on PS3

OmegaVader's picture

it's on most electronic devices. The question is, what color is it? A glowing, green power icon, espeically of that specific hue, is signature Xbox 360.

That said, though, it still fails to explain the ' i '. Maybe there is a multiplatform initiative going on? Maybe it signifies a new MGS altogether. Who knows.

But like I said earlier, releasing it on xbox 360 just makes financial sense. It's like choosing *not* to have money. Konami simply can't do that!

OmegaVader's picture

I'm banking on a 360 port. It just makes absolute financial sense -- MGS4 production cost a great deal, and Konami stands to make a significantly larger profit if they add in the 360 installation base.

If it's true, though, it'll be the final nail in the coffin for the PS3 as far as personal appeal goes.. All that will be left on the console that I have any interest in is whatever the ICO team is working on...and one game simply isn't enough to warrant such a massive purchase.

bluemanrule's picture

I would hope that LittleBigPlanet, God of War III, and Heavy Rain would minimize your cognitive dissonance arising from your buyer's remorse. At any rate, as a 360/PS2 owner, I would love to see MGS4 on the 360. Technically, the 360 is capable and 360 owners would eat this game up. Besides, it would be the first time this generation that an exclusive game went from PS3 to 360. With Eternal Sonata & Bioshock moving from 360 to PS3, it's only fair that the 360 gets one, right?

If anyone here is a true gamer, they would be happy that as many people as possible experience a game like MGS4. I have hypothesized that Ryan Payton, now at Microsoft Game Studios, will oversee the 360 port. This explains why Halo: ODST is such an abbreviated experience. Once he fulfills his duties there, he can then shift his expertise to Konami's golden nugget for the 360.

jazzbrownie's picture

The first time an exclusive ps3 game goes to 360? How about tekken and final fantasy xiii?

bluemanrule's picture

Jazzbrownie, you are correct. These two are indeed multi-platform titles but... neither Tekken nor FFXIII is not a timed exclusive like Eternal Sonata & Bioshock were. This timed exclusivity would be the first from PS3 to 360. This is what I was referring to.

jazzbrownie's picture

Thats understandable.

I'm of the opinion that timed exclusives aren't exclusives at all, and are just a ridiculous marketing ploy a lot of the time. I'm patient enough (and have enough obligations distracting me) that I can wait for a game. There are the cases where timed exclusivity is totally the developer's decision, with no financial motivation, but this normally isn't the case. That's why you don't see timed exclusives on the PS3; Sony isn't willing to pay for them.

That being said, I still think it's ridiculous that FFXIII is seeing simultaneous release on 360 and PS3. I don't understand sitting on a finished product (the PS3 version) while working on the port (360) just because someone cut you a check. That just seems like disloyalty to the consumer to me.

NickgamertagO1's picture

Face it Jazz, Square know's they are going to sell FFXIII like hotcakes, they could care less if many PS3 owners are mad, with the alleged check that MS cut SquareEnix and the 360s significant installed base lead, their business model is what they care about, not Sony fanboys (not calling you one) getting mad they lost an exclusive and may end up waiting a bit longer for their console's version of the game while the other one is being finished. I'm going to laugh when the 360's version sells more copies than the PS3 (which would not be a shock). The PS3's version may have a higher tie-ratio (check GTAIV's tie-ratio story) but with a bigger installed base, the 360 version may end up selling more with a lower tie-ratio.

Are you going to not buy the game (if you were going to in the first place) because SquareEnix may appear to be disloyal? I would think not.

jazzbrownie's picture

It's not that the game isn't an exclusive - I couldn't care less about that - it's just that they've claimed that they're doing the PS3 version before they do the 360 (and haven't even started on that one, yet) but releasing them at the same time. The game would probably sell the same figures no matter when they released it on 360. Of course I understand the situation and Square's perspective, but I can't help but feel a little sting on my cheek left behind by Square's massive hand.

And yeah, I'll probably buy it.

NickgamertagO1's picture

You're right about SquareEnix saying that hadn't even started yet which kind of surprised me that they would sit on a finished product waiting for the 360 port. I'm assuming they're confident they can do a quick port or else we may not see FFXIII for another couple years.

Now that I think about it, it makes sense that MS would have paid them off because SquareEnix waiting for the 360 version to be completed could prevent people from buying PS3s for an earlier version of FFXIII. That incentive is now gone. If that's the case, they would have had to pay them quite a bit I'd think. Who knows...

In the end though, we gamers benefit (ok, maybe not PS3 owners who may be feeling a similar sting as you feel) from the game being available on both systems.

Brendon's picture

What buyer's remorse? I own all three consoles and actually regret buying the 360 the most, as Microsoft has shown how incompetent they are at creating a high quality console. I love the games on it, but I hate how they gouge money out of you for little things like how my 130 dollar DS can do wireless but my 400 dollar 360 (at least when I bought it) can't. Even the Elite should have at least come with it. Or how I have to pay for online play. Or how after 19 months of use my system shits itself. This should never have been a problem.

The PS3 on the other hand has been a great system overall. To be fair I did only buy it a few months ago in June, so it still has time to prove me wrong. At least I don't have to pay 10 dollars extra on top of the controller costs to have a battery pack, or buy a dongle to use the controller on the PC.

bluemanrule's picture

I share similar compliants about the 360. This excessive nickel-and-diming is tautologous, hardware speaks for itself, and the library is crazy thick. I am of the camp that believes the PS3 will eventually surge ahead of MS this generation. That's why I replied the way I did. The PS3, although it's had its challenges, still has the chance to be this generation's superior gaming experience.

NickgamertagO1's picture

Interesting observation in regards to Ryan Payton.

As far as the exclamation marks, I see that as just a reference to the exclamation marks that have been used in the game (at least in the first one, the only one I liked) when an enemy gets alerted to your presence. The green in the context of a gaming teaser would lead one to believe it has something to do with the Xbox. Maybe because there are two exclamation marks means there will be two games; one for the 360, one for the PS3. But who really knows, this teaser was released for one purpose, and we're fulfilling that purpose in these forums right now.

bluemanrule's picture

I do believe that the "i" is truly indicative of an Apple compatable version of Metal Gear. Kojima included an iPod in MGS4 simply because he loves it. I can see him making an itunes MGS4 game. I would like to see a 360 version though. That would be fantastic. Besides, when you have Ryan Petyon in house, you can't really go wrong.

OmegaVader's picture

I don't believe you understand what "cognitive dissonance" is; or at least, you've used it in a manner that makes little sense in the context -- maybe you just failed to point out where I contradict myself. I am not sure why you think I have any sort of buyer's remorse, either; perhaps I failed to make it obvious that I don't own a PS3, but rather, a 360. I was intending to buy a PS3 once upon a time, but if MGS4 makes it to 360, that will kill what little interest I have in it. That's not to say it will be without worthwhile titles -- I applaud Little Big Planet, and recently Valkyria Chronicles has caught my interest. Just not my $400 interest

I'm all for spreading the good. I would very much prefer a one console market...or maybe, just a two console market, one of them being the Wii.

bluemanrule's picture

I believe that my initial reply was aimed at Brendan and not you. Secondly, I'm extremely familiar with cognitive dissonance, just more in relationship to consumer behavior, not psychology. However, I believe the initial comment alluded to the fact that the PS3 would lose all its allure if it lost this one exclusive. I wholeheartedly disagreed with that.

To your point, I misinterpreted the comments to infer that the poster owned a PS3. Sorry, for any confusion.
