Home Reaches 10 Million Visitors

Sony opens new action MMOG space in its social world as user numbers reach new high.

Sony opens new action MMOG space in its social world as user numbers reach new high.

Developed by UK studio Outso, the space, called Sodium, has players piloting customisable tanks in both multiplayer and singleplayer arena combat. The first section of the game, called Salt Shooter, consists of 50 stages is now live.

The space is monetised using the 'freemium' model – the first five stages are free, but to access the rest of the section, players must purchase a tank pilot outfit. New weapons and defences can be bought with both in-game currency earned through combat and with real cash.

SCEE has also opened two new spaces based on Uncharted 2 and Ratchet And Clank: A Crack In Time, and has said that a new MotorStorm space is due to open 'soon'.

The company says that Home now houses over 100 different games to play, 50 spaces and over 2000 virtual items to collect, has hosted 250 community events and has been visited by 10 million players since its beta opened in December last year.

Emphasising Sony's aim for Home, European Home business manager Dan Hill says, "The more game spaces there are, the better it gets, and the number of spaces keeps on growing. For developers, there’s no better way of driving interest in their titles than giving fans a hands-on, interactive experience based around the game itself. A game space in PlayStation Home ought to be a core element of every studio’s marketing strategy for new titles.”

A full report on Sodium appears in the new issue of Edge, which is arriving with subscribers now.
