Peter Edward, director of the PlayStation Home platform for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has stated that the virtual world “will become an essential component for all PS3 games."

The online social gaming service has amassed seven million users globally since the launch of its open beta in November 2008, 80 per cent of which are male 18-35-years old, reports Gamasutra.

"For Sony, revenue isn't the main driver for Home. We're in this for the long-term," Edward said. "Home is the starting point for PlayStation 3 online, and that's something that gamers are going to expect as more games support Game Launch from within Home."

Edward was referring to game-specific areas in PlayStation Home such as the Warhawk Command Centre, which enable the community to gather together before launching into multiplayer sessions.

"Players can set up their teams, choose the map and talk tactics before jumping into the game. This will become an essential component for all PS3 games," he said.

Sony needs to get the finger out, i'm not using home anymore, it's not worth the time it takes to start it up here in Norway. The European part of home sucks big time.
Why did they launch it if they can't provide more contents

I use HOME a fair bit and I use my PS3 generally more than my 360 which if it wasn't for Fallout 3 I probably wouldn't use at all.

WOW! A lot of 'hate' here for Sony...

I do wonder sometimes, if you guys 'hate' Sony so much why not just ignore them and go play on other systems and support other companies. What is it you exactly want?

I guess people just cannot stop moaning and complaining...

Well...as a gamer and consumer since i had my ZX81 back in the day, I`ve seen sony enter the market with the MSX range and leave. Then? Come from NOWHERE with The playstation, taking it`s rivals by complete and utter surprise-A couple of whom, at the time said Sony would FAIL due to having NO experince in the console market, saw their fortunes change-Yes SEGA and ATARI-Saw the PS2 despite being nightmare to work with and least powerful become the force it is.

Now? As a PSP owner: i`ve watched the 3rd party support dry up to next to nothing-thank god it IS Multi-region. What did sony do in response? Why of course.....Launch MORE hardware redesigns. what is i wanted? Try GAMES for it.....?.

As a PS3 owner, ignored the pointless tech. specs. Bought a reliable smart machine, wi-fi outta the box, free online play, joy to upgrade HDD etc. these areas? sony got RIGHT.

Games wise? it`s proved it`s worth with Wipeout HD, Killzone 2, uncharted etc etc. But....Making it such a nightmare to develop for? HAS alienated developers and meant SO often i`m faced with buying the Weakest version of a multi-platform game.

Chuck in to ALL the above: HOME-Total waste of resources-Sure sony can bang the download figures drum till the proverbial cows come home, But....How many of us downloaded...hated...deleted?

Vidzone? FAR better thing.

The PSP UK Price. PSN europe store? shambles compared to rest of the world.

what do i ant? sony to go back to Being SONY, Not the NEW ATARI. deliver on a few promises and wake the hell up before it`s too late.

We need 3 STRONG competitors to keep the market fresh.

Now...Is that TOO much to ask?

Where fanboys see "hate", those of us who are actually paying attention to the game market, see constructive criticism.

WazWii, I don't like to use the term fanboy at all, but most of us are Sony fans; so maybe you're something more.

This site's full of anger, not hate. Personally, I've attacked Sony lately not because I want them to fail, but because this is not my Sony. You know, the Sony with no fans that took almost all the video game marketshare from everybody else.

Maybe I'm a bit older than you, but my Sony used to watch everyone make announcements & smile. Then they would release something that was two steps ahead of everyone else, for cheaper, and laugh. I would look at my friends companies, yell "snap" & give them the finger. I had better 3D first, dual-analogs, & then DVD support while my friends struggled 2D, cartridges, single-sticks, GD-ROMs, DVD add-ons, & bulky controllers.

Now look at them today. iPod's with no touchscreen, high-prices, bad posturing, & playing catch-up to any & everybody. Every product that comes out is something I've seen done better before. The only way I can get excited about new Sony products is too actively avoid every other system on the planet. They treat me like I'm a moron - acting like I can't see bad copycatting for what it is. If I want to get on the "Sony-Train", I need to expect high prices & old technology. I was with Sony because of what they did, not who they are!

Now I'm left with continually trying to rationalize reasons to stick with Sony. When I can't, I get angry, and it manifests itself in my posts. People who didn't once love Sony wouldn't care so much.

They are going about this all wrong.

All they are doing are creating extra steps between gamers and games.

I admire the idea behind launching the game from within Home, after selecting maps and teams, etc., but as an owner of both PS3 and Xbox 360, I can tell you that Microsoft's Party System is much more immediate. And the fact that LIVE games can tie directly into that Party System, allow gamers to congregate with their friends, chose up teams and levels, only increases that immediacy of the gamer/game relation.

Sony's way is just doing things the long way around . . . the very long way around. I am three of the 7 million people with a Home account (one for my US, UK and JP PSN accounts), and I like quite a number of people who have Home accounts, I hate booting into the thing. Having to boot into Home, and then load up the game space, and then finally get to boot up the game with my friends, is a chore, one that is not only not fun, but a waste of everyone's time as it takes far longer to do that, than accomplishing the same goal on the Xbox 360's Party System.

If Sony really wants Home to succeed as a centralized hub for social gaming, what they really need to do is build Home into the PS3 dash. And I don't mean as a separate app like it is now, but as an integral part of the dash . . . maybe even replacement for the existing dash. And even then, they are going to have to streamline the interface to make accessing the full functionality of the PS3, as well as getting into the games, much more accessible. Unfortunately, I do not think that we are going to see any of that until Sony launches the PS4.

Switching gears, as for the comments Sony keeps making about how revenue is not the driving force behind Home, I wish they would stop it with that bullshit. Because as long as I have to pay for everything in Home, and hardly any of it is ever free, then Home is very centered around revenue, and as such, will always have trouble catching on with the rest of PSN users. I think it is a shame with a company like Microsoft, who is famous for being greedy, has given away tons more free stuff for their Avatars and the NXE since it launched last November, than Sony has for Home which launched around the same time.

If Sony wishes to prove that revenue is not the driving force behind Home; put their money where their mouth is, if you will. All they need to do is introduce a user commerce system into Home, similar to the one found in Second Life. It does not have to be as open and as chaotic as Second Life, but considering that Sony has Media Molecule in bed with them, there is no reason why Home cannot feature tons of user-created content, which users can then buy, sell, trade or give away to each other.

If they really want to make Home interesting, they should have Media Molecule give me the tools to create my own home, and create my own furniture and create my own clothes, and then have the ability to create my own store front and buy/sell/trade these items with whomever I chose. But of course Sony would never, ever actually do something like that, as they are too afraid that any manner of real freedom in Home, even the quasi-freedom that I have just spelled out, would put a dent in their revenue aspirations for Home. So they either need to give us the freedom to create and trade our own gear, or stop bullshitting the whole world about how, "revenue isn't the main driver for Home."

MS must have got the flags out already.

Sony? clueless or so it seems-Downloaded HOME-Found it like pushing a wheelbarrow under water-Slow, labour intensive etc. deleted it right away.

They have proved they CAN pull out the odd gem-Vidzone is great, but these are mere scraps when they promised a 12 course meal.

I totally agree with the sentiment, but I just can't understand how slowly Home has implemented this essential feature. Putting it on Warhawk is hardly the answer - they need it on LBP last November!!!
