Intel Shutting Down Five Plants

Chipmaker says 5,000-6,000 jobs will be affected.

Intel has not been able to escape economic recession, as the chipmaker announced this week that it will be closing a total of four plants, a move that will affect 5,000-6,000 employees.

The firm intends to close two assembly test facilities in Penang, Malaysia and one in Cavite, Philippines. The company will aso halt production at Fab 20 at Hillsboro, Ore., "an older 200mm wafer fabrication facility."

The fifth location to cease operations is the D2 facility in Santa Clara, Calif.

Intel said not all affected employees will leave the company, as some may be offered work at other locations.

The plant closures will take place between now and the end of the year.
