Iwata on Pushing Dragon Quest Westward

NintendoĆs president wants Dragon Quest IX to thrive in the West, cites Brain Age as an example of how Nintendo can push games overseas.

New details have emerged from Wednesday’s Square Enix press conference where Nintendo president Satoru Iwata gave a brief speech.

Before the announcement that Dragon Quest X will arrive on the Wii, Iwata claimed that he wanted the DS version of Dragon Quest IX to receive the same level of success in the West as it does in Japan.

"There are two things I'd like to make reality,” Iwata said. “The first is to build a thriving Japanese game market that rivals the West's. The second is to form a strong tag team to promote Dragon Quest overseas.”

Speaking of successful migrations of Japanese games, Iwata reminded attendees of how crucial a promoter Nintendo can be in terms of global audiences: “At Nintendo, we were able to popularise the Brain Age series overseas, which was said to be unmarketable.”

“I want to increase the number of people worldwide that understand the appeal of Dragon Quest,” he continued, adding that “I'm looking forward to working together with Mr. Horii and Square Enix."
