After outselling PS3 during the month of September in Japan, Xbox 360 hardware has again edged out its high-def rival, according to Media Create.
But it's the handhelds that have topped home consoles thanks to Japan's commuter culture:
Week of 9/29-10/5
DS Lite 42,385
PSP 26,045
Wii 25,330
PS2 8,618
Xbox 360 8,271
PS3 7,232
Microsoft said Thursday that it was raising Xbox 360 forecasts in Japan. John Schappert, Microsoft's corporate VP of online game services and game software stated during Tokyo Game Show, "We've done better than we forecast. We are finding that we have a shortage of hardware."

Hook us up with some US NPD numbers for September. They don't come out till the16th, but hey, maybe you have some connections or something ^^.
Isn't that 5 weeks in a row that 360 has beat PS3 in Japan now? At first I thought it was a fluke, but now I'm not so sure.
Of course, neither of those numbers are anything to get excited about compared to the handheld and Wii numbers (or North American sales numbers), but this has to be disturbing and embarrassing for Sony.
Yeah, Sony has been whipped by the 360 in the US since PS3's launch (the 360 has INCREASED its console lead over PS3 since the PS3's launch), now they have lost 5 weeks in a row in Japan, and if that keeps up...
PS3 selling the LEAST hardware out of every system, console or handheld, should really worry them. Even if it is only for 1 week, at this point in it's "10 year llfe cycle," it shouldn't be near the bottom of ANYTHING.
Poor little PS3... outsold by the PS2... crazy times.. I blame the credit crunch... ;-)
Sony however has 3 different machines available - and that PSP seems to be doing quite well. Microsoft only has their 360 to rely on... and it's definitely, finally, doing well in Japan. Let's see for how long. I blame the amount of games available for the PS3... for some, that's just not enough - and it's understandable. Microsoft is currently succeeding in winning over RPG fans and also targets the casual market... whether they can actually "beat" Nintendo though, is something I strongly wonder.
