Japanese PS3 sales fell by over 90,000 units during the PS3 Slim's second week of availability, according to data from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain.
While Sony’s console recorded its biggest weekly sales total in Japan following the September 3 launch of the PS3 Slim, with the new console moving 150,252 units, there was a sharp drop in demand for the system during the week ended September 13, with advance figures from Enterbrain showing PS3 sales of 57,056 units.
A number of major Japanese retailers told us that the drop in PS3 Slim demand wasn’t a surprise given the fairly small number of units Sony Computer Entertainment Japan released into the marketplace. PS3 Slim supply was more than adequate, they said, with no shortages experienced in the first ten days of availability.
Nintendo’s DSi reclaimed the top spot on the hardware chart during the week ended September 13, selling 66,416 units, while PSP and Wii sales fell below 20,000 and 15,000 units respectively.
Hardware sales for the week ended September 13 (for the two weeks ended September 13):
DSi – 66,416 (125,524)
PS3 – 57,056 (207,888)
PSP – 19,572 (42,117)
Wii – 14,556 (32,643)
DS Lite – 9,206 (14,765)
Xbox 360 – 4,927 (9,541)
PS2 – 3,100 (6,788)
We’ll have a closer look at Japanese hardware sales results on Friday when Media Create reports its weekly data.
I was reading somewhere that Sony execs hoped that the PS3 slim would bring a jump of 11million PS3 sales in the first 6 months after it's launch. It's just dawned on me with these more realistic actual sales how mad that was of them to hope for that.
Where were you reading that? I'd be really interested in seeing the source article.
You know it might have even been Edge dig around the PS3 Slim stuff for it.
Do you have a link?
One has to wonder if Sony is happy or disappointed with the sales numbers. They probably have estimates of the number of people who already owned a PS3 up(down?)grading to the slim. Still, I think I'd be happy with the sales.
Peaks and troughs, peaks and troughs...
it's definitely a sharp drop for the PS3, but selling 50k+ and coming second only to the DS is respectable nonetheless. hopefully the system can continue with similar sells until FFXIII.
the people buying PS2's, I wonder what games they do it for.
