Konami has revealed a new Castlevania game, titled Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, at its E3 press conference.

The game, which is being developed by Clive Barker's Jericho creator Mercury Steam in collaboration with Kojima Productions, was first unveiled last year as Lords of Shadow.

A fantasy action title set in an open game world, it sees players take on the role of Gabriel, a member of a group of holy knights called the Brotherhood of Light. Guided by the spirit of his murdered wife, Gabriel must defend the innocent against the supernatural and bring order to an unbalanced world.

The game's voice cast includes Robert Carlyle, Patrick Stewart, Natasha McElhone and Jason Isaacs.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will take the Castlevania series into brave, uncharted territories, and is a breathtaking adventure that boasts stunning aesthetics, deep and challenging gameplay, and a truly inspirational voice cast to deliver the game's dramatic depth,” said the title’s producer, Dave Cox.

I wonder why Konami just can't give us an old-school 2D Castlevania with updated graphics (seriously, the handheld versions are a recycle, even Shanoa sprite is practically Charlotte!).

I understand that an old-school can't be a massive hit, but the development would be a lot cheaper than this GoW clone.

With Kojima Productions on the team, I have high hopes indeed!

Having viewed the trailer, i'm not too impressed. The game looks like another run-of-the-mill 3rd person Slash em' Up.

Here's hoping i'm wrong, though...

Excellent. Mercury Steam can make some truly impressive looking games (say what you will, but Scrapland and Jericho at least looked phenomenal) - if they can capture the Castlevania spirit and actually translate it into 3D (without trying to duplicate the 2D trappings other 3D Cv's have attempted), this might be a winner.

Of course, overcoming the massive stigma 3D entries in the franchise have will be the biggest hurdle... that and the fanboy ire bubbling up right about now...

Have you seen the game's trailer? - It looks very impressive , like a cross between GOW & Shadow of the colossus .
The monsters shown are huge!
