Valve’s acclaimed Left 4 Dead sold over 1.8 million retail units in 2008, according to EA.
The publisher revealed the sales figures hours ago during its turbulent financial posting, where company CFO Eric Brown assessed the sales performance for a number of EA titles, from Mirror’s Edge and Dead Space to Need For Speed and FIFA 09.
The 1.8M sales of Left 4 Dead accounts for the PC and, more significantly, Xbox 360 retail editions, while the Steam version itself was published by Valve was not included in the figures. EA also clarified that these figures specifically were not indicative of the game’s total global success, as EA is the game’s retail distributor in "most, but not all of the world."
The publisher also announced that Harmonix’s Rock Band 2 sold 1.9 million copies, and that Warhammer Online has over 300K paying subscribers in North America and Europe.
EA stated that its revenue from digital download games and micro-transactions grew 75% throughout 2008, reaching revenue of $21 million. EA announced in December that a large number of its high-profile titles were launching on Valve’s digital platform Steam.
“In our digital direct businesses, we generated $116M in revenue – up 28% year-over-year with strong performance across all units, including Pogo,” claimed Brown. He added that wireless revenue landed at around $50 million in 2008 – up $11 million from a year ago, “on the strength of Monopoly and Spore.”
Left4Dead deserves good sales, it's the game I've been waiting 15 years (or so) for. Now, if only Valve can deliver us some more episodes to play through. I'd love to see the next Doom or Quake go the L4D route, although I can't see that happening now.
Im actually happy with EA lately. They seem to be taking more risks, putting more polish into thier games and seem to be publishing/developing/shoveling less crap. Ima happy camper... for now.
proud to be a contributor of that 1.8mil, right here. easily, the most welcome surprise of last year. can't wait for that shiny, new DLC (assuming we're all still alive when it's released).
All in all then a good year for EA. Its amazing to see them diving into the industry head first with these new IP's. Five years ago I would have never have believed EA would push the boat out as far as they have in recent times. EA have always been known for their lack of originality and creativety in their games, yes they've dabbled with new ideas in their plethora of never ending sports titles but in all honesty thats just not the same as creating a truly new and exciting game experience is it?
