Lego Universe to close

NetDevil's Lego Universe is to shut down on January 31 due to a lack of subscribers, just over a year after it launched.

A post from the team on the game's forums reads: "Today we are very sad to announce that Lego Universe will be closing. This was a very difficult decision to make, but unfortunately Lego Universe has not been able to attract the number of members needed to keep the game open.

"We want to thank the fantastic community of players who made Lego Universe such a vibrant, fun and creative experience."

The news brings down the curtain on a troubled life for the Warner Bros MMOG. First scheduled for release in mid-2008, it went on to miss planned launches in November 2008 and 2009. It eventually went live on October 26 last year.

All players who are paying subscribers on December 31 will be refunded and given access to the game's final month for free, though game cards will expire on December 1. The closure follows an evidently unsuccessful move towards the free-to-play model in August.
